Die Kormorane (Phalacrocorax) sind eine Gattung aus der Ordnung der Ruderfüsser (Pelecaniformes). Die Gattung wird in eine eigene Familie (Phalacrocoracidae) gestellt. Es handelt sich um mittelgrosse bis grosse Wasservögel, die in Kolonien brüten und nach unterschiedlichen Quellen mit 26 bis 43 Arten weltweit verbreitet sind. Tragen die Vögel einen Federschopf, werden sie als "Scharben", sonst als "Kormorane" bezeichnet, doch entspricht diese Einteilung nicht den tatsächlichen Verwandtschaftsverhältnissen. Im Volksmund heissen diese Vögel auch "Seeraben" oder "Meerraben"; der Name Kormoran ist entsprechend aus dem lateinischen "corvus marinus" ("Meerrabe") abgeleitet.
